The book follows the story of the three Knotek sisters, Nikki, Sami, and Tori, as they live a life of fear under their abusive mother Shelly, and passive father Dave Knotek. The story is told in a non-linear fashion, with events told from different perspectives and in the form of anecdotes littered throughout the story.
However, one thing is always clear in the story: that what Shelly did was wrong, and it scarred the girls for life. Shelly Knotek exhibited signs of her psychopathy at a young age, and that turned into severe abuse later in life for everyone around her. The three daughters, and later an adopted son, faced Shelly’s abuse for years before they had the opportunity to leave. However, Shelly also put a friend, Kathy, who lived with the Knoteks, through hell, so much so that Kathy ended up dead. In addition, Shane was also killed, and years later, another man came to live with Shelly, who faced the same abuse.
In the end, the Knotek sisters banded together to turn their parents in to the police for their crimes, and justice was served.
